How to Hang Art Over Wallpaper (without breaking a sweat)
Let’s be honest—hanging artwork over wallpaper can feel like choosing which child is your favorite. But don’t worry, you can have both. While it’s nearly impossible to hang something without leaving a trace, here are three ways to do it with grace:
1. Command Strips
Not going to lie, these are the go-to for commitment issues. I’ll admit, I have a rocky relationship with them (read: I always stick them on backwards and then panic-remove them along with a piece of drywall), but if you're more precise than I am, they’re a solid no-nail option. These have worked well when there’s not an operator issue, but make sure your art or frame is super lightweight, even a plexiglass or thin glass in the frame will help. These Command Strip brand hooks aren’t too bad either.
2. Cut a Window
Feeling brave? Use a sharp blade to cut a tiny flap right where your nail or screw needs to go. This can be triangle shaped, rectangle shaped …as long as one size of your shape stays attached. Fold the paper back, put your nail into the drywall behind the paper, then hang your artwork. If you ever need to remove your art, just press the folded back flap of wallpaper back in place. It’s not perfect. But it’s better than a gnarly whole in your wallpaper. It’s like wallpaper surgery—with a reversible outcome.
3. Patch Work
Always, always keep your wallpaper scraps. If you ever need to repair a larger area, you can cut a piece that matches the repeat and patch it in place. It’s like a tiny wallpaper band-aid—practically invisible, especially if you align the pattern just right.
So go ahead, hang the art. Your wallpaper won’t hate you for it.
